I'm a fan of the Shackleton parka and wore one last year to Antarctica, testing it in early summer conditions at sea and on land. This year, Shackleton has collaborated with Leica to produce an extreme weather photographer's parka, the Frank Hurley, after the man who documented Shackleton's 1914-17 Imperial Trans Antarctic Expedition.
Hurley's superb images included those of their ship, Endurance, crushed in the polar ice. He and Shackleton had to select which to keep and which to destroy as not all of the heavy glass plates could be taken in the lifeboats in their remarkable voyage to rescue on South Georgia.
The Italian-made [I apologise that originally I said British-made which refers to other Shackleton products] Shackleton x Leica parka is designed to function to -25 degrees Celsius and has many features designed for the photographer in cold conditions. As I know myself, keeping batteries warm and yet accessible is essential in extreme cold and the parka has some 15 pockets and an external one for the camera itself.
Price £1950 from Shackleton.
